Solar PV Feed In Tariffs

What Are Solar PV Feed in Tariffs?

Solar PV Feed in Tariffs give anyone who generates their own electricity through Solar Panels – including home owners, public sector bodies, charities and businesses – the opportunity to earn an income for 20 years and to cut their energy bills. Feed in Tariff income is tax free for all domestic owner occupiers.

There are three ways to earn and save money from Solar PV Feed in Tariffs: through the Generation Tariff, Export Tariff and Bill Savings.

  • The Generation Tariff pays you for each unit of electricity that is produced, regardless of whether it is used, for 20 years. The FIT pays 15.44p per unit of electricity generated for systems up to 4kWp, and 13.99p per unit for systems over 4kWp and up to 10kWp.

  • The Export Tariff pays an additional 4.5p for each unit of electricity that is not used and is exported back to the national grid.

  • Substantial Bill Savings are to be gained as the electricity that is generated can be used at the source, resulting in lower energy bills.

How Much Can I Earn & Save with FITs?

The example below is based on a 2.5kWp system. At a cost of around £6,000, this system typically gives a return of £535 per year and will recover the cost of installation in around 11 years. This represents a Return on Investment of 9%.

Earnings & Savings Example

A typical 2.5kWp system can earn the following:
  • Generation Tariff = £335 per. year.
  • Export Tariff (extra 4.5p per. unit) = £49 per. year.
  • Electricity Bill Savings = £151 per. year.

Total Earnings per. year = £535.
